WHY WE DO IT

Kupanda Sisters Inc believes that literacy is the foundation of lifelong learning and education because when we help someone to acquire literacy skills, we help them acquire freedom and autonomy.  A person or populace that cannot read or write experience difficulties in developing simple everyday tasks. The lack of education ultimately leaves a people demeaned and impoverished, and at Kupanda Sisters we rewrite these flagrant injustices so that we may empower women and children to break the poverty cycle and experience freedoms that are otherwise unattainable.

SOCIO-ECONOMIC IMPACT OF ILLITERACY

Illiteracy is a global dilemma that has a real numeric and measurable impact on the world. Although it may seem to most of us existing in the First World today that illiteracy is not a common occurrence or that it is not costing us much, the numbers would speak to the contrary.

According to the World Literacy Foundations White pages on “The Economic & Social Cost of Illiteracy,” it is estimated that 1 in 5 people are completely illiterate and it costs the global economy upwards of 1 trillion USD. That same study suggests that 3 billion people cannot read or write at a basic level.

This lack of basic literary comprehension is the very cause Kupanda Sisters, Inc. fights against. We focus especially on the most vulnerable, women and children who are particularly susceptible to the aftermath that an absence of reading and writing comprehension can cause.

The World Literacy Foundation has stated that “Women and children are often the losers when it comes to worldwide literacy…” and globally it is a harder societal wall for women than for men.

Yet prevailing gender inequality and poor finances are not the only costs that illiteracy brings. This plague brings along with it a larger series of more severe implications such as  “prospect of poor health outcomes… a lack of social cohesion, a higher level of crime and lack of self-worth…” and ultimately “limits a person’s ability to engage in activities that require – critical thinking.”

Kupanda Sister Inc hopes that you take the time to become a part of our cause and donate your time, capital, and energy to seeing a world where all women and children can rise above adversity while reading and writing ourselves into a better world.
